Do you tell people what you think they want to hear, even if you are not being honest? Are you trying to get by on being a people pleaser, even if it means going against what you really believe or want? It’s only too easy to be overcome by the influence of others, only too easy to want to be liked so badly we will surrender who we really are to be liked.
Or maybe you’re looking for someone who isn’t a people pleaser? Maybe you’ve dated the kind of person who will pretend to be what they thought you wanted only to find out months later that they were pretending? To find a person who is free of deceit and untruthfulness can be hard, very hard, but it always starts with us. Only we can start to make the change.
If we want to find someone who is upfront and sincere, we must first be upfront and sincere ourselves. If we are hungry for a relationship that is respectful, open, candid and plain-speaking, we must become respectful, open, and matter-of-fact ourselves. This is because—not always, but often enough—we will attract people that are like us.
It can be scary. It can be difficult. And it can be downright frightening. But to strive to be yourself—your free, broken but loving, open and giving self—is one of the few things worth really fighting for. So never give in. Dig deep and summon the courage to live audaciously and honestly. Reach and strive for what is real, not what is unreal. Never settle for anything less than the truth. Honest-to-goodness, the freedom of being yourself is the best freedom we can know.
