Social Media that works for you by Sherri Rosen

Social Media That Works For You

So you are an author, musician, athlete, doctor, lawyer, healer, and you have created beautiful
work, and you want to share it with the world. It won’t take long
before you face the question: Should I use social media to promote my
work? Which social media site is right for my project?

It’s a good question because there are a lot of good reasons to use
social media. For one, it’s affordable (free, actually). Second,
social media can create an organic, word-of-mouth buzz about your
project. Re-tweets, Facebook likes, youtube followers…it all adds up.
Social media is easy, practical, and efficient. Slowly but surely,
social media can do a lot of good for your book or project.

But there is a dark side as well. Social media can also be a tangled
web of wasted time and thwarted efforts. If you are not careful about
which sites to use, and how to use them rightly for your product, you
will end up driving yourself nuts. Soon you can’t seem to balance your
energy spent between Pinterest, Blogger, Facebook, Google Groups, and
Twitter. You feel spread thin. Drained. Fuddled. You’re mixing and
matching passwords, retweeting things you did last week, and starting
to sound like a noisy gong. When this happens, it’s time to step back
and take in the big picture.

The only solution is to pick the sites that are the most powerful for
you, that you can handle. Are you a visual artist? Maybe Pinterest can do
more legwork for you than Twitter. Are you a poet? Maybe pithy
Facebook updates are a better way than long blogs. Are you a social
extrovert? Maybe you’ll like the constant updates of Twitter more than
the slow roll of Google Group emails.

At the end of the day, it’s important to know what you’re good at and
how to use social media to enhance and complement your talents.
Sometimes more really is less. It’s okay to be specific and narrow in
your outreach. Pick the sites that are the most power for you. Slim
down the weight of responsibility. And whatever you do, do it well. A
little bit of a good thing can go a long way.
