Constructing a successful, enduring brand

When it comes to branding, the best way to start defining your label is by removing yourself from distractions and start thinking seriously. Go to your favorite park, café or that special go-to place that helps you clear your mind. Don’t forget to take a notepad, pen or an iPad/laptop.

The more focused and clear your brand vision is, the stronger its message will be conveyed in the marketplace.

1- Begin by asking yourself the top 5 qualities that embody your brand. For example, Coca-Cola evokes: heritage, family values, traditionalism, American patriotism, and timelessness. In doing this, you explore and identify your brand values, asking yourself: how would customers describe my brand? What is unique about doing business with my brand?

2- What products/services does your brand offer? Identify the elements that differentiate you from competitors in the marketplace. Write down what you offer and how it’s unique in one or two sentences.

3- For example: Amazon’s vision statement is: “”Our [Amazon’s] vision is to be earth’s most customer centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online” (Amazon.com).

3- 4- Create a visual board for your brand. What imagery do you see associated with your brand? Use Pinterest! By the end of your visual imagery session, you should be able to have a clear idea of your brand’s personality- it you cool? Is it more classic? Is it loud? Is it elegant? In this exercise, you can start to see your brand coming to life in the form of a person.

Take pleasure in spending time envisioning and shaping your brand. At the end of your brainstorming (which can take weeks or months, be patient) you should be able to discern: your target marketing, the market segment that your product/service serves, what your brand offers, and how it differentiates itself from the competition (Hubspot).
