The Big Bad V-Word
Did you know that it was once taboo to say the V-word? That’s right. It was once unacceptable to say vagina. But thanks to Eve Ensler with the Vagina Monologues, which share the painful stories about the violence that was perpetuated on women, we can do more than say “vagina:” we can make a change for the better.
Ensler is an artist and an activist who wants to make a change. And she is currently pushing a new campaign—“One Billion Rising.” It’s a heart-clutching, eye-opening movement, a global project for Valentines Day, aka V-Day. She is inviting men and women everywhere to “dance, rise up, and demand an end to violence against women.
Inspired by the U.N. estimate that one in every three women will experience violence during her lifetime (meaning, about a billion of us), Ensler’s activism seeks to bring love and awareness to a hurting world. For too long the violence against women has been swept under the rug. It’s time we named it and put a stop to it. To many it’s the same violence that has been done to our planet earth.
Isn’t this what Valentine’s Day is all about? Restoring love and justice and peace? Letting others know we care? In the Congo, hundreds of thousands of women have been brutally raped by armed gangs who are fighting over the country’s gold and diamonds. Where’s the press? Where’s the V-Day love?
Ring the alarm bells! Shout it from the rooftops! It’s time to end the injustice, sexism, and oppression against women around the world. It’s time to recover the true meaning of Valentines day: that women are special, women are unique and have an inherent dignity.
