Isn’t it good to make sick children laugh? by Sherri Rosen
Quite a number of years ago, Robin Williams was in a film about a controversial student in medical school called Patch Adams.
Patch was very smart in medical school and would do unorthodox things such as going into the children’s Cancer ward, uninvited,
putting a clown’s red nose and carrying on and making these wonderful children laugh. At first as you walked into their room, they
would be just lying there with their eyes closed attached to all of these machines and medications. Then Patch Adams would
introduce himself and begin talking and joking and clowning with the children and their laughter became infectious.
Patch Adams was always in trouble in medical school. He was not the traditional doctor that these schools turned out. He was different
and had the attitude that these children were human beings, and better to make them laugh with all that they were going through then to just
allow them to lie there with no sense of fun in their lives.
I love working with children, sick children especially. When I went to volunteer at Sloan Kettering Children’s Cancer Ward, the head of the volunteer services at the time
told me he would not put me in the ward with the children because I would frighten them. I guess I must have intimated him. But then the film “Patch
Adams” came out and I realized I had a kindred spirit. As a result I have worked with Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients helping to make them smile
or laugh, and it is my dream to clown and volunteer with Patch Adams for children and adults in the USA and overseas.
It’s such a good idea to not always accept what you are told to do and go with your creative spirit, especially when it comes to making sick people laugh.
This may not be for everyone, but if you connect to doing something like this, then just go and do it. It will make you happy and it will make a sick person happy.
If you haven’t seen the film “Patch Adams” go see it. It will inspire you once again to not give up on your human spirit.
