Does your work have meaning to you?
Do you feel you are making a contribution to the world or are you just in it for the money?
I cannot bear to bring myself to go to see the film “The Wolf of Wall Street.” It would feel like I would be going through all that we went through with
the one and only Bernie Madoff. As a matter of fact, the daughter of “The Wolf of Wall Street” wrote an open letter to Marty Scorsese, the respected filmmaker of this film,
and Leonard DiCaprio, the lead in the film, telling them what it was like to be his daughter, and not appreciating that they made this type of film about her dad.
Sounded like he was a real scumbag.
If you have children, are you teaching by doing? Are you teaching them a value system of respect, kindness and hard work? Or are you teaching them to charm and
use people?
I went into publicity on a fluke and had no idea in the bigger picture how much it would mean to me. What i saw in the beginning were publicists that weren’t telling it like it is,
and stream rolling potential clients and the media. I wondered how could I fit in. And then organically things began to happen. The type of books and people that
I cared about were finding me. Authors who were writing about things that mattered in the world, whether it be a comforting story for Young Adults on inspiring them
or an author who experienced the world in one way and by the end of the book was transformed in a positive way. I also found that I didn’t have to lie to media or my clients
to get them into the news or book them on radio and television.
I also tell my clients upfront that it is so important to be straight with me and with media, because if you aren’t it could come back to haunt you. It’s not good for your reputation and we certainly have not created a reputation of dishonesty.for our company. Otherwise I would have gone out of business years ago.
I didn’t learn about meaningful work growing up. What i saw were harding working folks that probably didn’t even have the choice about the kind of work they wanted to do, and just would follow the next guy in trying to make a living. I really didn’t see anyone concerned about ethics. To this day sometimes I wonder how ethics became such an important part of my personal and business life. Especially where we are constantly bombarded by materialism and greed in our culture.
Sometimes I have to say “no” to a potential client because I don’t believe in their work. I work so hard on behalf of the client I have to believe in what they are doing. My excitement for the project will show in the kind of work I do on their behalf.
So if you think your actions don’t matter, they do. Whatever direction you choose. And if you have children, if you don’t think your actions will be learned by them, they will. I have always felt no matter what we do in life we all need to be kinder to one another, and we all need to be happy in the work we choose. What’s your thoughts?
