Books Bring Joy To Our Lives by Sherri Rosen
I’ve been a NYC free lance book publicist for over 20 years. I got into it after posting an ad, many years ago, in The New York Times Situations Wanted column. I then became a book publicist, with my very first book I did publicity on was 12 years old, and I took the job. The rest is history. Within 6 months the book went onto the NY Times Bestseller List for 63 weeks. The author was great on interviews & I was great booking her. This is when we actually used the phone to talk to people.
I had been in theatre as an actress for many years, but i was newly divorced and I needed a full time job making decent money. Before I got this position I thought I was lousy in business. Business never attracted me, but somehow, this was different, I realized I wanted to continue to work with authors whose books make the world a better place. Once I discovered how much I loved being a book publicist
it brought me so much joy. I felt my work was being seen and I felt I was helping to make the world a better place to live in. I never wanted to take a job just for the money, because I knew that would not make me happy.
It is joyful for me to create wonderful ideas on a book publicity project to make sure the author’s book is
SEEN & a buzz is being created. I don’t work with everyone that reaches out to me. I need to read thru
the author’s book to see if I’m excited about it like the author is. That excitement is going to come
through my work on behalf of the author. If I don’t like the book I cannot work with the author, and if the
author is disrespectful to me or my staff I either will stop working with them if I’ve already begun, and
nothing has changed or if in our initial contact I see they don’t respect who I am, I can promise you it’s a
NO!
