Reach for the stars-also on audio-(What a potential client needs to know)

It’s been a long time since any of us heard the warm and hearty greeting, “You’ve got mail!” But that doesn’t mean we don’t love getting emails. And for us here at Sherri Rosen Publicity, we especially love getting emails when they are invitations from potential clients to explore new people and current projects. Pour the coffee! Open the attachments! It’s time to explore something fresh and exciting!

Often, writers and artists write wanting to know if we’ll do publicity for them. What’s our rate? What kind of results can we deliver? Who has worked with us in the past? But often, it can be difficult to craft a custom estimate because they don’t give us enough information about their project.

And so we thought we’d put together a few helpful hints about what kind of information to include when you contact us with a publicity query. First, let us know if you are working independently or if you are contracted with a publishing house. Is your book self published, or a royalty-advanced contracted book? If you are signed with a publishing house, do they have an in-house publicist that they plan on working with, or are they looking to outsource their publicity?

Some potential clients will ask how much as the first and only question. When I receive that I know that the conversation may not go any further because neither of us have really explored the depth and potential of the project.

So let us know if your masterpiece is music, a film, any type of visual art project, a restaurant owner et al,  and let us know your background.  We would love to learn as much about you, to get a full picture, because we work so intimately with our clients.

It also helps if you include a sample of your book or project. This is because we don’t treat our clients like cookie cutters: we tailor our publicity campaign specifically for our clients. This way we can get a feel for the marketability, potential platforms, and voicing for your project. It’s hard to get an idea of how to publicize a work that we’ve never read! Please feel free to include as much or as little of your piece as you are willing to share.

As beautiful as email can be, it’s best to talk on the phone or SkYPE, in order to quickly get a feel for one another, to explore different options, and to affirm that we are with you every step of the way. Also where I have published 2 eBooks myself I am walking the talk. I understand where my clients are coming from.  Where I have also recorded my own poetry to music either in audio and/or video I have “gotten my feet wet.”

We’re always pushing the envelope here, reaching for the stars (or helping to make them). Besides sending out our weekly blog I am now recording them so potential clients have the option to listen to me or read the blog.  Some of the client’s press releases I am also writing and putting on audio.  We like to vary things and spice things up to make any campaign exciting.

So share your project with us! We would love to explore it’s success, see where it can go. We cannot wait to hear from you.
