Give Me Your Truth: A Candid Look at PR Profiles on Dating Sites

Online dating often gets a bad rap. The black hole of the internet. Sour first dates. Stalkers. You get the idea. But online dating can be a practical and efficient way to meet amazing people…maybe even “the one.”

I have had a lot of experience with online dating. I’ve learned a lot the hard way, and I’ve learned even more the fun, laid back way we want first dates to be. For me, the most important quality to look for in an online dating profile is honesty. Honesty (actually, truly) is the best policy in dating—especially online dating. And so I go out of my way to make sure I’m being honest.

With me, does my profile give an accurate description of who I am? Or is it a dreamy picture of who I wish I was? Am I real about my character flaws, my hopes, my mistakes, what makes me tick, and what gets me going? Or am I trying to paint a rosy picture that is anything but the truth?

If you want a committed relationship say so, and if you don’t say that also. After all, you want to get what you want, but how can you if you aren’t a straight shooter.
For me, one of the traits I’m looking for, more than any other, in a potential date is honesty. The last thing you want is to find out that the person you thought was, say, a light drinker, hard-working artist from the Bronx is actually a heavy-drinking, lazy office worker who dreams of someday being an artist. I knew a gal who was on a few dating sites. Her profile was great, perfect, really, except for one thing: she forgot to mention that she was an Orthodox Jew.

Well, on most male and females on these dating sites you will see honesty is one of the traits that they most want in a mate. She then began to share with me that some guys enjoyed speaking with her, but when they tried to call her on Saturdays she would never return their calls and a lot of them were getting freaked out because she wasn’t calling back. She said she did not want to tell them she was an Orthodox Jew because that would turn them off. Orthodox Jews don’t make calls or do much of anything on Saturdays.

A guy shared with me that he never put his true age down on the site, because he felt that would turn a younger woman off. Even though he was in his 60s, he felt like if he said he was in his 50s he would have a better shot at getting a first date at all.

And the photos that are put up. Wow-sometimes when I meet the guy in person I say “you don’t look like the photo you have up on your profile.” Many men and women put a photo of them up that was taken years ago, and how they feel it won’t matter when you meet them in person I don’t have a clue.

But none of this will do. It won’t work because it’s not honest. Honesty is the only way to ever truly find real intimacy. Our only hope at genuine companionship and true love has to start on the firm foundation of love. And love is honest. Period.

So love deeply. Take risks. But always, always, be frank and sincere, honestly.
