I Went From A “People Pleaser” to a Bold, Bodacious Book Publicist & Storyteller by Sherri Rosen
When I was growing up in Lynn, Mass I was groomed to be a people pleaser meaning say yes to almost anything and never once thinking what does Sherri need. People pleasing in work & play may work for some people, but I got totally burned out.
I got married at the naive age of 21. Now some marriges work when you get married that young, but not for me. My first marriage lasted about 10 years, creating 2 sons, and understanding that I was with a person who would not grow with me. I realized, finally, that our value systems were so different. For instance, my ex didn’t think twice about saying “the check is in the mail” (when we paid by check), when he was behind on paying bills. I finally realized that in a relatiosnip for me, in order for it to work, we both must have the same value system, which my first husband and I did not.
When I asked him to go to therapy he said “no”! “Let’s all live under one roof & each go our separate ways.” I said “no way”! I wanted a better life for myself and my 2 boys that we had created during our 10 years of marriage.
During this time I had been an actress for 10 years, not making much money, so when we divorced I took a full time job as a book publicist. I never felt great in business because I loved being in the arts, but somehow I was born to be a book publicist. The very first book I worked on was already 12 years old and within 6 months the book went onto The New York Times Bestseller List & stayed there for 63 weeks. Amazing!
Taking my experience one step further I began getting involved in standup storytelling, writing, creating, producing and performing true stories from my life. It was been both healing for myself and others, and these above decisions were some of the wisest ones I’ve ever made.
