Aging! A Topic We Ignore! Why? What Are We Afraid Of? by Sherri Rosen
We spend so much of our time, within the USA, on how we look on the outside, that we forget there’s little people inside of us who have been hurt & traumatized through the years.
Some choose to heal from the inside out and many choose just to ignore the inside and I believe that’s why we are in this trouble in the USA. Our Democracy is going down the tubes.
When I was a young mum I told the 4 boys that I raised that “it’s okay to cry, to show your feelings, to be kind and to have empathy. Many years later I asked if it worked for them and they said “no, we went with the culture.” I look back and realize I was ahead of my time and the culture wasn’t ready. Hopefully the culture is ready now because our country is in bad shape a/k/a what was elected in our WH.
Aging folks have the right to choose if they want to be sent to a retirement community, but many want to stay within our society and continuing offering our skills and wisdom to whomever wishes to listen.. Aging needs to be a natural part of being alive & we should not send away aging people to go off somewhere. Many would be wonderful parts of our communities. Many aging people, are wise, not all, but to be in a multi-generational community would be a blessing for all.
Saying that men age better than women is BS and many of us bought it. It’s a made up lie! I know many gorgeous, aging women who are beautiful on the inside and out. And women afraid to tell their age because they will be ostracized. Again BS. Why not be proud of your age and all that you’ve accomplished.
I dress the way I want to even though I am considerd an aging woman. I live in NYC where many women wear black, and it’s great, but I choose to go with blazing color, especially during hard times. I’ve had people stop in the street complimenting me on my bold outfits. I tell them “it brings up my energy”, and when I am speaking to them I can see it brings up their energy also.
Aging people’s families are all grown, some having families of their own, and creating their own life and what they want, even if they decide not to have children. and moving far away, which makes it even more challenging to stay connected to family.
Many families don’t talk to one another, and one reason, which is huge–they don’t agree with the family, so the family cuts them off. It’s painful & sends a message of pure brokenness within a family.
The evil in the WH shines a light on the evil that was voted in, and we need to wakeup and realize if we don’t change as a culture and get our act together & VOTE!!! It will only get worse.
So give it your best shot. Think about your family, community, friendships, lovers et al & help make our society an all inclusive one. AGING ET AL!!!
