You will remember what we did when you didn’t need us so urgently

Although I know the difference between generosity and being foolish (at least most of the time), my general rule of thumb is: If people need a favor, I do it, without any questions asked.

My personal experience has always celebrated building connections and fostering relationships that are genuine and real—with business people and with people in my personal life. It has taken me years to build these constructive relationships with colleagues and friends. And I’ve learned that—as sad as it sounds—a lot of folks just don’t go about it the same way. They network to get what they want, to find some personal advantage or gain. But I don’t believe in using people for what you need in the moment and then cutting and running off to someone else. Period. I genuinely care for all the people with whom I have been in business with for over all years, and I am still in touch with them.

For example, I have cultivated a relationship with a radio personality since I first launched Sherri Rosen Publicity,NYC—way back in l99l. Sometimes we catch up on the phone or by email; other times we might even meet for lunch. He is compelling and cogent interviewer and he is so wonderful and generous with all of my clients. They all come back and tell me just how great he is to work with, how the experience was enriching. His name is Bob Salter and he’s had this amazing program for years in New York City called Sunday Magazine on WXRK and WFAN, NYC. Check out his incredible work by visiting here: http://newyork.cbslocal.com/audio-on-demand/bob-salter/

I also work with this great guy named Tyler Blanski, and we have a great connection. He’s a writer and a musician out of Uptown, Minneapolis. I worked on publicity for his book, Mud & Poetry: Love, Sex, and the Sacred, and it turned into a friendship and a business relationship. Every week we build more bridges, brainstorm, and celebrate what we love: books, art, people, making connections, and getting the word out there for our clients. —Not out of some dark and secret motive, but because we genuinely care.

I believe in who I work with. And I want to not only see their careers soar: I want to stay in touch with them, encourage them, and help out in any way I can. It’s not just because it’s my job: it’s my heart and mind, too. It’s my life.
